Hi JLP, thanks for taking the time to leave a response. I agree with you 100% that this isn't a male or female issue. I told it from Alex's perspective because I know how Alex feels about Beth and not vice versa. But I do know that Alex displays the same qualities. It's not exactly accurate to immediately assume that Alex doesn't give back or that Beth's needs were not important or that Alex does not possess any of these qualities. I also think that being emotionally reactive is different to having your own problems and complications. I'm interested to know why it was assumed that this advice was for women specifically when I had meant it to be for both genders. Would you have felt differently if the names were flipped but none of the other words were? Because the story would apply just the same. In any case, I appreciate knowing how my writing is perceived.
